Patrick McCarthy, B.S.
Physics, B.A.
Philosophy, Companion of
the Companionate of
Merit of the Kingdom of
Desmond Association,
Fellow of the Augustan
Society, officer of the
Noble Society of Celts,
member of the North
American Chapter of the
MacCarthy Clan, and an
Officer of the United
States Air Force. He is
the son of Mark McCarthy
of Oak Bluffs,
Massachusetts and Claire
Lansing of Ionia, New
York. Mark is the son of
Daniel McCarthy and
Mabel Champney who are
respectively agnatic
descendants of the
MacCarthys of Carbery,
and the de la Lande
family of
Champigny-sur-Marne,
Paris. Claire is the
daughter of Gerrit
Lansing and Rita Smith
who are respectively
agnatic descendants of
the Lansing family of
Albany, New York, and
the Smith family of
Wilmcote, Warwickshire.
For the arms, Azure is
symbolic of loyalty, Or
of charity and wisdom,
and Argent of peace and
truth. The tinctures
were chosen to represent
these virtues; however,
they also incorporate
the tinctures in the
arms of the Kingdom of
Ireland, the province of
Munster, and the
armiger’s 9th
great-grandfather and
founding ancestor in
America, Gerrit
Frederickse Lansing. As
such, they reflect the
armiger’s patrilineal
and matrilineal origins.
The lion rampant
guardant on a chief is
remindful of the lions
in the arms of the
armiger’s Norman, Welsh,
and Scottish ancestors.
The wreath of broom Or
is representative of the
armiger’s Plantagenet
ancestry. The chevron Or
denotes the armiger’s
duties as a leader and a
military officer to
defend and preserve his
country, people, and
heritage. A displayed
eagle is traditionally
representative of one’s
role as a protector, and
so it was chosen to
denote the obligations
of the armiger’s
station. However, it
also evokes the
demi-eagle in the arms
attributed to
Charlemagne and to
Domhnall Mac Carthaigh
of Desmond, and so the
crowned eagle
illustrates the
antiquity of the
armiger’s patrimony,
Carolingian ancestry,
and ancestral roots in
the royal Houses of
antiquity. The books and
estoile are more
allegorical than the
other charges. Both are
coloured Argent to
denote that truth is the
basis of counsel and
righteousness—the
hallmarks of good
leadership. The closed
books denote a
willingness to always
provide and heed good
counsel, whereas the
estoile symbolizes
righteousness. The motto
reminds the armiger that
his principles, his
obligations, and the
tenets of the Church are
the foundation for a
life dedicated to God,
clan, and country.
