There are two
meanings to
the arms:
The initial
meaning: the
colours of the
shield are
black, gold,
and white,
mirroring the
colors of the
city of
Pittsburgh,
the armiger's
family’s
ancestral
home. The
cross
represents the
Catholic
faith, placed
above all. The
four golden
swords
represent the
armiger and
his brothers
(quadruplets)
raised as
warriors for
Christ.
The second
meaning: the
white cross
represents
Christ, the
light of the
world and is
argent to
mirror the
colour of
light. The
swords,
representing
the four
evangelists,
are Or as the
colour does
not shine of
its own light
but rather
reflects the
light of
Christ. Black
represents the
world without
love of
Christ, which
we are called
to remedy
through
preaching the
Gospel and
reflecting
Christ’s light
into the world
through our
words and
actions.
The motto:
Nihil Nisi Te
Domine, is a
quote from St.
Thomas
Aquinas. After
writing upon
the real
presence in
the Eucharist,
St. Thomas
Aquinas heard
the Lord speak
while in
fervent prayer
before a
crucifix. The
Lord said,
“You have
written well
of me Thomas,
what shall be
your reward?”
St. Thomas
replied,
“Nothing if
not You,
Lord”. This
phrase, in
Latin, is
taken as the
motto in
dedication to
the pursuit of
a Christ
centred life.
The crest,
suggested by
the artist,
simply
indicates a
devotion and
obedience to
Rome (the
Church).
The armiger is
a Knight of the
Order of The
Holy
Sepulchre.
