The Arms of Ian James
                                              Young AM, Baron of
                                              Kilbirnie
The arms are based on the Arms of Peter Young of Auldbar, registered upon the 226th page of the 1st Volume in 1672 and annotated “which coat is declared ye paternal of the name Young”. He was the grandson of Sir Peter Young of Seaton who was tutor to King James VI of Scotland.

Upon the centre pile is a Naval crown to signify that the armiger is a Naval officer, and below it is a fleam, or barber-surgeon’s knife, to signify that the armiger is an orthopaedic surgeon. The crest of a demi-lion is based on the crest of Peter Young of Auldbar, with the sword as an emblem of military honour pointing downwards to represent peace, rest, or the end of conflict.

The armiger was appointed as a Member in the Military Division of the Order of Australia on 26th January 2019.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Health Administration. He has served as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy for over 25 years up to the rank of Captain and in the Canadian Forces for over 8 years.

The Dignity of the Barony of Kilbirnie was registered in the Scottish Barony Register on 12th September 2024, Volume 6 Folios 17-19. The Baron of Kilbirnie was recorded in the Registry of Scots Nobility on 12th December 2024, Registry No. 00713.

The Barony of Kilbirnie is one of three baronies, Kilbirnie, Glengarnock and Ladylands, that form the parish of Kilbirnie in Ayrshire. The earliest owners were the Barclays of Ardrossan who settled there in the twelfth century. Kilbirnie was erected as a Barony by a Charter of Confirmation recorded in the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland dated 1st April 1600 by King James VI. The barony has been with the Crawfurds, the Lindsay Crawfurds, the Lindsays, the Boyles (Earls of Glasgow), and the Cochranes.
