The
lion rampant is
associated with valour
and leadership with
ferocious warrior traits
and was chosen to
reflect service and
loyalty.
The
plants on the shield
reflect the armiger’s
Ulster-Scots
(Scots-Irish) heritage
and identity as well as
the region his origin,
Northern Ireland. The
thistle has long been
associated with Scotland
and is seen as the
emblem of that country
and the flax flower has
in recent times appeared
in various heraldic
designs as the flower of
Northern Ireland,
examples are evident on
the logo of the Northern
Ireland Assembly as well
as on the badge of the
Supreme Court of the
United Kingdom and can
be found on some
denominations of UK
coinage.
The
lion salient continues
the lion theme
reinforcing the same
symbolism, while the
locomotive wheel
represent progress and
the armiger’s great
passion for
ferroequinology (study
of the iron horse,
better known as rail
enthusiast).
