The design reflects the armiger’s ancestry in Cornwall, where the Stephens family (recorded under several contemporary spellings of the name) appears in parish and local records for several generations, including the documented family line associated with the parish of Crowan in the early eighteenth century. Members of the family lived within the mining communities of west Cornwall associated with land held under lease from the great estates of the district, including those of the Godolphin family, long prominent in the governance and economy of the region. From this Cornish stock the family later established branches in North America, preserving the memory of its origins and its connection to the disciplined life of the parish and the working landscape.

Having borne arms in armed conflict, the armiger assumes these bearings in recognition of that service and in keeping with the long martial tradition by which those who have defended their nation bear heraldic arms as enduring marks of duty and honour.

The principal charges of the arms reflect both heritage and service. The field Azure denotes loyalty and steadfast resolve. The chevron Or, traditionally associated with protection and faithful service, recalls the building of enduring foundations through labour and the ordered life of the communities from which the family emerged. The eagle displayed Argent, armed and beaked Or, signifies vigilance, strength, and the aspiration toward honourable conduct.

The crest, an armoured  dexter arm grasping a sword encircled by a wreath of laurel, acknowledges honourable service and the exercise of disciplined leadership.

The motto, "Per Aspera Ad Astra", translated to “Through hardships to the stars” affirms perseverance through adversity and the pursuit of honourable achievement.
