The
arms are based upon the
origins of the surname
Snowden/Sneddon or from
the lands of Snawdone in
the bailliary of
Lawderdaill. Both places
derive their name from
the Old English pre 7th
Century 'Snaw' meaning
'snow', plus 'dun' a
hill or mountain i.e., a
hill where snow lay for
long periods. The
armorial bearings
represent the snow
covered mountains
(Argent) or “dun” or
hill, with snowflakes
(Argent) representing
the “snaw” or snow, in a
blue sky.
The
black (Sable) lozenges
represent coal, as the
armiger’s ancestors were
coal miners in Alloa,
Scotland for a number of
generations. The griffon
crest represents the
purported origins of the
Sneddons coming from the
lands of Lauderdale and
the use of the gryphon
coat of arms by the
Lauder family.
The personal motto,
“Gryphus Stat Vigilante”
(Gryphon stands
vigilante) is in
reference to the armiger
being very aware of the
dangers surrounding us,
in these modern times,
and keeping the family
safe.

The
armiger’s great
grandfather Thomas “Pap”
Sneddon, (born in
Oakley, Fifeshire,
Scotland) and wife
Christine Newton (born
in Carnock, Fifeshire,
Scotland) emigrated from
Scotland around 1882,
and moved to Uinta
County, Wyoming, where
they continued coal and
copper mining. His
grandfather, Robert
Newton Sneddon, was born
in Lochgeily, Fifeshire,
Scotland and emigrated
with the family. The
eventually moved to
Idaho, where armiger’s
father Fred Warren
Sneddon was born.
The armiger’s
grandmother Florence
Bobette (Taylor) Sneddon
(married to Robert
Newton Sneddon), was
descended from family of
James Taylor “of
Virginia” and was a
member of DAR (Daughters
of the American
Revolution. Zachary
Taylor (President of
USA) was also descended
from this James Taylor
of Virginia.

The
armiger’s great
grandmother Margaret
Louise (Burnett) Simpson
(on armiger’s mother’s
side – Margaret Lou
Burnett) was mother to
US Senator Milward Lee
Simpson, and his son US
Senator Alan Kooi
Simpson, both of
Wyoming. This Margaret
was daughter of
Fincelius “Finn” Gray
Burnett who was hay
contractor for the Army
in Wyoming, and who also
fought in the “Hayfield
Fight” (1867) against
Red Cloud of the Lakota
Sioux.
The armiger is a 36 year
(1979-2015) retired
equipment
engineer/project manager
from the Boeing Company,
in Seattle Washington.
