The armiger is an American citizen whose paternal ancestors appear to have emigrated from England to the Virginia Colony in the mid-seventeenth century. The family further immigrated to North Carolina and settled in Anson County in 1820.

The shield features Argent and Gules and two counterchanged chevronels. These tinctures and chevrons or chevronels are common to many English grants of arms to those surnamed Pope. The design uses these common elements without implying a direct genealogical connection.

The crest, a popinjay, cants on the armiger's surname, Pope.  

The badge, combining the state flower of North Carolina and a heart, is a tribute to the armiger’s native land and his son, William Lewis Pope, who died of a congenital heart defect.

The motto, a quote from Ezekiel 36:26, continues the symbolism of the badge and has deep personal and spiritual significance for the armiger and his family.
