The
surname "Gregg" means
"watchful". The design
of the shield reflects
the prayer in Psalms 141
utilizing the concept of
watchfulness, requesting
the Lord make us perfect
by watching the doors of
our mouth (Psalm 141:3
Set a guard over my
mouth, O Lord; keep a
watch over the door of
my lips.) The portcullis
is a heavy metal gate
which guards the door of
a castle. The one who
guards the gate is
Christ. His symbol, the
cross, appears above it.
The blue background is
taken from the shield of
the armiger's home state
of New Jersey, while the
Yorkshire Rose
symbolizes the armiger’s
ancestral descent from
Yorkshire, England.
The armiger's motto is
"Give Glory To The
Lord". The Crest is a
golden eagle,
symbolizing strength,
courage, farsightedness
and immortality. The
golden eagle is holding
a branch of almond which
has anciently been
regarded as a symbol of
spring and the idea of
watchfulness. As the
armiger is a
businessman, the helmet
is a "tilting helmet",
the "business" helmet of
mounted warriors.
The
armiger’s ancestors
include knights and
Lords of several manors
in Yorkshire as well as
American ancestors who
served in the American
Revolution, War of 1812,
the Union Army in the US
Civil War and WW II.
Mr. Gregg is married to
Robin L. Gregg and they
have two children Marcy
K. Gregg and Benjamin R.
Gregg. He has varied
business interests and
is a Vice-President for
an international
reinsurer.
He is also an
accomplished musician, a
patron of the arts and
various charities, a
delegate of the World
Affairs Council of
Philadelphia and an
Esquire of The Most
Venerable Order of the
Hospital of St. John of
Jerusalem.
