The
petition for armorial
bearings was accepted by
the Lord Lyon on the
basis that while a
member of Clan MacThomas
the armiger’s surname
‘Thomson’ should be
reflected in his new
armorial bearings.
The stem of the Arms of
Thomson is Argent a
stag’s head cabossed and
this had to be
incorporated in the
arms. He was then asked
to consider designs for
submission. At this
stage he was finally
able to commit his
thoughts to paper and
submitted application
that his arms include
reference to him being a
Burgess of Guild and a
Burgess of Trade of the
City of Aberdeen. With
leopards being part of
the Arms of the City of
Aberdeen he wish these
incorporated.
In addition, he was
formerly a Police
Officer in Aberdeen and
wished to record that he
was the founder member
of the Grampian Police
Charity; he did so by
using a chequered flag
carried by a demi lion.
The arms illustrated
above display the medals
as an Officer in the
Military and Hospitaller
Order of St Lazarus of
Jerusalem, Police Long

on the shield is to

stag’s head being red
also signifies Aberdeen.

(1986), the fire on the
oil rig Ocean Odyssey
(1988) and Cormorant
