The
armiger is the holder of
the feudal Earldom and
Lordship of Aboyne.
The armiger first
petitioned the Lord Lyon
in November 2016, having
acquired the baronial
dignity of the Earldom
and Lordship of Aboyne.
The Lord Lyon, having
researched the name
suggested the design for
the arms but was open to
further suggestions for
the crest and motto.
Lyon choose the boar’s
head between two garbs,
as well as the colours
green and silver because
these have historical
connections to the
Earldom and Lordship of
Aboyne. As for the Lion,
this is taken from an
old Portuguese
achievement (XV century)
for a Simões creating
him a knight and a lord.
Although the armiger had
no choice on the design
of the shield, he had
free choice on the crest
and motto.
For the Crest, the
armiger chose the
pelican in her pity; it
symbolises that his
legate is both a
sacrifice and an
offering to his
descendants. Also, the
pelican is the alchemic
symbol of distillation
and rectification, which
means the preparation
for the ascension of
one’s soul. There is
also symbology in having
5 chicks and 2 of them
holding an acacia.
As for the motto, it is
a reminder of the
armiger’s quest for
happiness by
self-exploration and the
practice of letting go
of one’s ego. This quest
is as old as humankind,
and even under the
bludgeoning of time, it
stands yet (Stat Adhuc).
