These arms have been used by the armiger’s family for several centuries and as at present there is no official body in Italy which can certify arms the armiger had them confirmed to his name by the Spanish Cronista Rey de Armas (King of Arms) on the 7th July 1995 and then petitioned the Lord Lyon to have them matriculated in Scotland.

The armiger has traced his family to the thirteenth century originating from Piemonte. From there one line moved to France, one line to Biella and Aosta, and another to the region of Como. All the lines were nobles under various rulers and each line used different arms. The armiger’s line went to live in Republic of Genoa in the year 1250 and in the sixteenth century moved to a small town in the province of La Spezia, Ponzo.

In Italian heraldry the chief of a shield often indicates a former political allegiance, a black crowned eagle on a gold field signified allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor. Originally the eagle in the arms was totally black, however the Lord Lyon chose to difference the arms by blazoning the eagle as armed and langued Gules for the matriculated. This chief known as "Capo d'Impero" also indicates an allegiance to the "Ghibellines".

Whilst crests and mottos are common throughout Italy the armiger has not found any traces of his family using either and so did not ask for any to be matriculated in Scotland; he has however recently adopted a motto for use in Italy.
