Arms: Azure, on a bend Argent, a wyvern Gules, a bordure counter-compony Argent and Purpure charged with three oak leaves Or.

Crest: A wyvern Gules, charged on the wings, one visible, with a wheel Argent.

Motto: Nunquam Captat Muscas.

Granted: Court of the Lord Lyon, 26 April 2006; Vol. 87, folio 73, Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland.

Charles Edward Francis Drake, physician and genealogist, member of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (MStJ, 2003; OStJ, 2009) the Royal Order of Francis I (Cav, 2006) and the Order of Sts. Maurice and Lazarus (Cav, 2007; Uff., 2010), quondam Baillie of the Barony of Tranent, educated Georgia Southern University (BS, 1973, physics, Summa Cum Laude), Medical College of Georgia (MD, 1977), University of Louisville (Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology); practice of cardiology, Savannah from 1982, quondam President of the Candler Hospital medical staff; Fellow American College of Physicians, Fellow American College Cardiology, Fellow American Society Cardiac Angiography and Interventions; Fellow Augustan Society; Member National Genealogical Society, New England Historic Genealogical Society, Virginia Genealogical Society, Society Genealogists, Heraldry Society of Scotland, numerous lineage societies, including Society of the Cincinnati in the state of CT, Society Colonial Wars, Jamestowne Society, Society Mayflower Descendants, Baronial Order of the Magna Charta, Order of the Crown of Charlemagne.

The armiger is the author of The Drake Family of Washington County, Georgia and is married to Rita Jayne Elizabeth Chabot, co-heiress of Raymond J. Chabot (vide entry for Rita J. Chabot), and has issue:

  i. Vivienne Rita Caroline Marissa Drake.
These arms were designed to show the family's relationship as cadets of the Drakes of Ashe, Musbury, Devon whose ancient arms were Argent a wyvern Gules. The motto answers theirs of Aquila Non Captat Muscas.

The armiger has published research indicating that the Drakes of Ashe were originally from Warwickshire and ultimately descended in the male line from Harold, feudal Lord of Ewias Harold, Herefordshire. Harold was the son of Ralph, preconquest Earl of Hereford, and grandson of Drogo, Count of Mantes, who was descended in the male line from the ancient Counts of Amiens and Vexin.

American ancestry:
Richard Drake, of South Petherton, Somerset, bapt 1609. Departed Bristol, Gloucester 1658 for Virginia. Issue Mary, Thomas, and an elder son:

John Drake, bapt 3 May 1647, South Petherton Parish, Soms., to VA 1658, married about 1670 Jemima Parnell, sister of Thomas Parnell in Isle of Wight County, VA; died about 1690. Issue Thomas, Richard, and eldest son:

John Drake, planter, born about 1675, Isle of Wight County, VA; died 1753, Southampton County, VA. Issue seven children including:

Barnaby Drake, Sr, planter, born about 1710, Isle of Wight County, VA, died 1797, Southampton County, VA; married Mary Scott. Issue nine children including the eldest:

Exum Drake, Sr, planter, born about 1745; Southampton County, VA; 10th Regiment, North Carolina Continental Line; died after 1820, Georgia. Issue at least three sons, including the eldest:

Richard Drake, planter and wheelwright, born 1774-5, Southampton County, VA; died 1857, Washington County, GA; married 1803 Pherabah Bryant, daughter of Jonas Bryant, Southampton County, VA. Issue an only son:

Francis Bryant Drake, planter and wheelwright, born 1806, Nash County, NC, died 1875, Johnson County, GA; married 1828 Selina King, dau of John King. Quondam LT GA Militia, Esquire in the Commission of the Peace, elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Issue eleven children, including:

Robert Lemuel Drake, farmer, born 4 December 1849, Washington County, GA; married 1871 Elizabeth Catherine Watson, daughter of Joseph Watson, Johnson County, GA; died 1923 Toombs County, GA. Issue eleven children, including:

Claudus Hinton Drake, farmer, born 1891; married 1917 Alice Mabel Gordon Murray, daughter of Charles Axon Gordon Murray; died 1965 Tattnall County, GA. Issue seven children, including an eldest son:

Charles Hinton Drake, physician, born 1918; recipient of an English grant of arms in 1984 (vide the parallel entry), quandam MAJOR USAF, Bronze Star, Croix de Guerre, despatches, educ Emory University, Medical College of Georgia (MD, 1951), married 1946 Estelle Carolyn Nail, co-heiress of James Benjamin Nail (vide entry for Estelle C. Nail), born 1918, Tattnall County, GA and has issue:

  i. Charles Edward Francis Drake, the registrant.
  ii. Carol Louise Drake, CPA, educ Medical College of Georgia (BSN, 1977, Magna Cum Laude), Georgia Southern University (BAA, 1987, Magna Cum Laude); member American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution.
