Office of Rome No.
11565 Series 3, 24th
November, 2016; Coat
of Arms Registration
Decree No. 8 (2016)
published in the
Official Gazette, 23rd
of January, 2017, Vol.
I.
One
of the original coat of
arms dates from the
Middle Ages and was
recognized as the
ancient coat of arms of
the House of Bravo de
Sobremonte, ancestral
hidalgos (hidalgos
solariegos). The ancient
parchment lacks the date
of the grant, but the
date of the last
sentence contained
therein is 24th March
1556. Therefore, King
Carlos the Third of
Spain, by Letters Patent
dated 9th March 1761,
granted unto N.H. Jose
Antonio Bravo de
Sobremonte y Castillo,
Knight of the Order of
Santiago, Judge of the
Royal Audience of
Seville, and Governor of
Cartagena de Indias, the
Hereditary Title and
Dignity of Marquis.
The
arms were updated by the
Third Marquis, N.H.
Rafael de Sobremonte y
Nuñez, Knight of the
Royal and Military Order
of Saint Hermenegild,
and Viceroy of the Rio
de la Plata, to include
motifs representing the
military commitment of
the Marquis de
Sobremonte in his
capacity as Spanish
colonial administrator.
A branch of his family,
living in Argentina,
added the family name
Jantus, and by marriage
alliance this line also
added the family name
Lordi from an ancient
Italian family.
The
arms were updated again
with the Motu Proprio
Genus A Me Habet
Originem dated 9th June
1975 by N.D. (Lady)
Emilia Lordi-Jantus,
Head of the House of
Lordi-Jantus de
Sobremonte, to include
the original motifs
together with those
reflecting more recent
familial history. The
new armorial bearings
represent both the
Spanish and Italian
sides of the family.
Both families have, over
the centuries, received
several distinctions and
titles.
