armiger, Séamus
ÓhEarcáin – James J.
Harkins IV (born 1935),
is the eldest son of
James Joseph Harkins of
Tamhnach an tSalainn
barony of Banagh in Tír
Chonáill, and Caitlin
Theresa, nee Clerkin
[ÓCleireacháin] of
Rockcorry barony of
Cremorne, Breffny. He is
an internationally noted
Irish historian, author,
lecturer, and world
traveller dividing his
time between Ireland,
Germany and the United
States of America; he
holds both US and Irish
citizenships. The
armiger successful
career spans service in
military, industry,
academia and public life
and reflects his varied
disciplines. An elected
life member of the
Donegal Historical
Society; he was the
founder and organizer of
The Florida Catholic
Heritage Trail (el
Camino de la Herencia
Católica en la Florida)
a bi-lingual endeavour
that documented how the
Catholic Church was a
significant and positive
force in the 500 year
history of that state.
The President of the
Florida Senate appointed
him to serve on the
State Elderly Affairs
Advisory Council. He
served as Trustee of the
Tampa Bay History
Centre, the Hillsborough
County Historical
Review, and County
Public Library Board. He
is the founder of the
SouthShore Round Table a
public forum that gives
political voice to
Hillsborough citizens.
In recognition of his
many years of service to
the public the
Hillsborough County
Commission of Florida
dedicated a regional
public library courtyard
as the: James J. Harkins
IV Plaza. The armiger is
a Knight of Columbus and
the Ancient Order of
Hibernians of America
serving as Florida State
Historian and
represented the Order in
Ireland. He is a member
of the Military History
Society of Ireland.
The armiger is married
to Christa Marta Lilli
nee Thünken of Fulda,
Germany; they have three
children: James Joseph V
(born 1970), Commander,
USCG; René Erich; and,
Gail Sharon; and. have
six grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.
