                                                Harling

The armiger petitioned for a grant of arms in memory of his father William Harling A.L.A., who died Sept. 15, 1943, at Palembang, Sumatra, in No. 1 Japanese Prison Camp. Cause of death, Malnutrition and Dysentery. He was born 28th Aug. 1910. Married 21st July 1934, Alice Ann Haworth d. of Robert Haworth of Blackburn.

The armiger, Peter Harling, born 1935, was the only child of William and Alice, and is the 14th generation in direct line from Leonard Herlyng of Wyckworth.

Married: (1) Olive Fairclough d. of William Fairclough of Clayton le Moors. 26th Sept. 1959. Had issue: Leigh Elizabeth Aulton B.A. 15th Aug. 1960. Married Peter Aulton B.Sc. and had issue: Charlotte, Sophie and Caroline.

A Copyhold tenant farmer occupying a Tenement and Garth named "Wyckforth" at Keasden in the Parish of Clapham, Yorks., where a further eight generations of his family farmed (later as Yeomen) for a further 310 years. Subsequently leaving the Parish of Clapham at the outset of the Industrial Revolution and removed to Preston, Lancashire, where the next four generations were employed, mainly as Blacksmith/Steam Engine Engineers, in the Lancashire cotton mills.

Having now retired from the Newspaper Industry, the armiger who studied Typography at Blackburn Technical and College of Art received the N.G.A. (National Graphical Association) Silver Badge of Merit, in recognition of past services to the Association.

Explanation of Arms:
Shield: The Garbs represent the early agricultural occupation of the family, the Owl is purely a personal family choice. The tinctures Gules and Argent represent the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Crest: The Lancashire Clog represents the Cotton Industry and the Book with the Lancashire Rose represents William Harling's profession as a Librarian.

The heir to the arms is Nicholas Robert Harling B.A.
