Stephen Joseph
                                                Lautens, Lord of the
                                                Manor, Prior's Hall,
                                                Lindsell (Essex)

The design is based on the arms attributed to the name Lautenschläger registered in the Holy Roman Empire's Grand Folio of Coats of Arms of 1656: Volume I, Chapter 93. Lautenschläger was the name of the armiger's great-grandfather who arrived in Canada from Austria in 1900. Mr. Lautens’ version has the arrows in black rather than gold, and with the background divided into eight rather than four. The colours of red and white allude to both countries. The arrows point upwards, alluding to rising fortune, and the gyronny design alludes to the wheel of progress. The crest is also based on that of Lautenschläger with the arrows in gold and the addition of a coronet of crosses patté, which alludes to his position as Grand Master of The Order of Saint Joachim.

The German motto “Immer Sicher”, meaning “always certain”, is part of a family saying. The full version is: “Always certain – sometimes wrong”, as a reminder of humility.

Stephen Lautens is the Grand Master of The Equestrian, Secular and Chapterial Order of Saint Joachim, an order of chivalry founded in 1755.

The armiger is a business executive and lawyer who was called to the Bar in 1988. He served as president of The Lawyers Club in 1997, has served as chairman of The Ontario Club and as president of The National Club (Toronto). He served for seven years as a Governor of The National Newspaper Awards.

In 2012 the armiger was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his volunteerism and community service. In 2008 he received the Freedom of the City of London (UK). He was made an Honourary Colonel and Aide de Camp to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 2006.

Stephen Lautens earned an LL.B. degree from Queen’s University, Kingston and a B.A. in history from Victoria College at the University of Toronto.
